Other signs of spring

Of course we all know the usual signs of spring – flowers blooming, leaves on the trees, snow melting etc. but here are a few more I noticed:

  • Fire ants  building ant hills by our driveway
  • The squirrel figured out how to bypass the squirrel guard on the bird feeder (it climbs a nearby second bird feeder pole and leaps over the squirrel guard). This isn’t my photo but you get the idea.   It’s hard not to admire how smart they are.

  • Birds building nests in our mailbox.   Bob finished building me a bluebird house yesterday so hopefully the next nest will be a bluebird nest in our birdhouse.   Pictures to follow very soon.
  • Weeds in the garden

Greenville downtown – up for an award

Downtown Greenville Falls Park in the running for national award for best public open space.  We are one of six towns nominated.

Cross your fingers that we win next month and get the $10,000 award.  Greenville was also recently recognized as one of the three best bicycle cities in SC.

Reflections on Mexico

This will be the last post on Mexico.

In Palaya Del Carmen there was a  very large WalMart.  Really packed with people and had a huge bakery.  You would think you were anywhere in US except for one thing. The parking was underneath and the store on top so you had to take your cart up and down and escalator.   Not an elevator.  It had extra big steps and worked beautifully.  Not sure I want to think about what happens if it breaks.

The highway had lots of landscaping to be maintained.  We saw a crew out trimming the miles and miles of hedges by hand with a machete.  Very efficient.  That blade must have been razor sharp.  No power tools to break and very quiet.

One night it rained and I saw a maid cleaning up about an inch of water in a patio.  Here we would get out the wetvac or a mop.  Not in Mexico.  She was slowly using a broom to sweep the water into a small dust pan and then dumped the water in a bucket.  Interesting.

The country surveys tourists when they leave and by far the biggest complaint is the hundreds of guys that decend on you when you are  arrive and are about to leave the airport and snagging you for a time share presentation.  We were told that it got so bad that in less then 6 months the government  will ban this from the airports in the whole country.  Score one for the tourists.

We had a good time but don’t plan on returning to Mexico again.  Wehave probably been there 20 times.  We no longer have the need to get away from a harsh winter and the stress of work to sit and do nothing by the pool and too many other places to visit.

Hope you enjoyed our trip.

Rembering Tanya

I can’t believe how empty the house is without that little 5 lbs. of  kitty cat.  I realized yesterday that it has been more then 35 year since we have not had a cat in the house.  We got our first kitty even before we got married and since then have usually had two.  We called her our dinner plate kitty because she was so tiny she could curl up on a dinner plate and still have lots of room left.   I have had a cat in my life and house since I was about four, except for 4 years in college, so it seems pretty strange and lonley.

What she lacked in size she made up for in personality and she loved to be held.

We got Tanya in early September 1993.  They thought she was about 8 months old and was so skinny, under 5 lbs.  Her records from Feline Rescue said the people that had her just fed her dry breakfast cereal.   She never has been interested in her food so keeping her weight up was always a struggle. She finally briefly hit 6 lbs.   We also guessed that she may have been taken from her mother really early because she never seemd to have learned to hunt.  She didn’t knead with her little paws or lick you and very rarely would meow.  Although affectionate, she was a pretty skittish kitty when we got her and I think it took over a year before she would come sleep by us.  For many years she would run and hide if we got company but it seemed after Zeus died that she got much more social and would always come hang out with company.  I don’t think you could find a cat with a sweeter disposition.  She didn’t even wiggle when we took her to the vet for shots.

What got her from the Feline Rescue cage into our home was that cute little face and the fact that as soon as I picked her up she snuggled up on my shoulder and purred away which she has continued to do thousands of times ever since.

This is one of the first photos of her by her catnip.

Tanya lived with Misha until Misha died at age 16.  They got along fine.  After Misha came big Zeus.  A picture of them together was quite rare.   He picked on her and when we lost Zeus at age 9 she didn’t seem to miss him and by then Tanya was 11 so we didn’t want to stress her out with getting another cat so she has been the only kitty for 6 years.

She spent the first 14 years in MN and then her travel adventures started when she went with us in the car to Orlando Fl for 6 weeks, Pickens SC for a week, Clearwater FL for 3 weeks and Breezy Point for a week.  Since the hotels we stayed at on the journey didn’t take pets we always snuck her in under a towel.  We told her she had to be “Secret Kitty”.  She rarely let out a peep and we only got caught once but not her fault we got caught. Finally there was this trip to SC.  She would sit on a pillow on the divider between our seats.  She was a better traveler then we were.

Eventhis last week as she was getting weaker we knew her mind was still sharp.  Our bed is really high and we saw that sometimes she couldn’t make that big jump up so we put a little stool by the bed and showed her a couple times to jump on the stool and then on the bed and she learned right away what she was suppose to do.  Smart kitty.  This is the same kitty who taught Fay and Bob to turn the water on in the shower every morning so she could get her morning drink.

She loved to sit above my keyboard and chase my fingers.  What I would give for that again today.  She didn’t have a favorite of Bob or me.  She would go back and forth between our laps and each side of the bed giving us each what seemed like equal time.

I know it won’t be too long before we have a couple cats again.  The house is just to empty without them and we love cats in our laps.

I took this photo yesterday.  Don’t know what made her eyes that color.   I thought the flash gave you red eye?  We sure do miss her.

The colorful side of Mexico

Each night our resort had an hour free show.  Every night different.  You would think “Mexican Fiesta” every night but it was much different then that.   Most shows were very modern, sometimes even a little strange.  Fanastic costumes. I remember reading a review someone gave of the shows and they said some performances and costumes were “odd, odd, odd” and now I know what they meant.  They were still really fun and very well done.   Here are a few photos:

At around 13 minutes the video shows the ball game done with a ball on fire.   That was really something to see.

At Xcaret there is a huge evening show that is half about the history of Mexico and the other half big spectacular shows from about a dozen states in Mexico.  A combination of dance, singing, story, music and more.  This is the second time we have seen it and we thought it was even better the second time.  There are over 260 very talented performers.   The protected outdoor theater is huge.   I figured about 10,000 seats!

I found this really good video of the show if you want some special entertainment wit sound.

There are a few other photos of our time in Xcaret and then lots of the very colorful show.  Wish I could play some music for you!  Enjoy.

Knowing myself?

The second class through OLLIE was Elder Wisdom Circle and I had mixed feelings about the class when I signed up.

Over 30 years I have read many books, taken classess, attended seminars and retreats,  searched my soul, etc. so I don’t feel I have neglected my “inner self”.  I have had more then my share of  “self help”  and “personal growth”  information but in the last decade have had little  interest in another “get to know myself program”.

Don’t get me wrong. All of that time spent learning about myself and others really did help and I did get to know myself better and made  changes because of what I learned.   It was good for me.  Now I am who I am.   I still need improvement but I am better than if I had done nothing and at this point do I still care?  Yes I do.

I’m glad I signed up.  Each week we will explore and give our opinion on  pre assigned two questions, one social and one more personal.   The purpose of the class is to help us listen to and understand others viewpoints on various topics and in our own interactions outside the classroom to continue that open dialogue.  The questions are not easy ones and I will be the first to admit that taking the time to do “deep thinking” on a topic is something I haven’t done but now will do.   It will be a good stretch for me.

I missed you so much!!!

Dear Microwave,

You have been gone for two weeks and I missed you so much.   I realize now that I took you for granted.   I right away missed you for thawing dinner and heating leftovers but I never fully appreciated the fact that you also were the vent over my stove and the light over the stove that helped me see what I was cooking.   You also are the night light that means I don’t have to turn on 6 floodlights in the kitchen.  In addition you were my most used kitchen timer that works much better then the one on my stove.  Who knew you were so talented?   I  even had to pop my microwave popcorn in a pot on the stove (which to my surprise actually did work).

I’m so glad you are back and that your repair was covered by our extended appliance warranty.  I don’t know what broke you so badly but I hope it never happens again.   I will never take you for granted.

Welcome home.

Foreign Policy and Bluebirds

I went to my first two classes today.   The first one is on foreign policy and the topic was the role of Presidential special envoys.   The whole area of foreign policy is something that I have had no interest in and so almost no knowledge about. This topic was no exception but I am delighted to find that with the supplemental reading and the 30 minute movie we watched and the discussion with 20 other people that now I could at least hold a somewhat informed conversation about special envoys (especially middle eastern event) and I am now going to watch news and read more in the media about foreign policy.   Of course everything gets shared with Bob so we have a good teach learn environment.   I’m so proud of myself and I can feel those brain cells multiplying!

It was a beautiful day here and around 4 p.m. Bob and I went to enjoy the outdoor hot tub.  We have been waiting for the birds to seranade and entertain us and today they sure did.   We have three birdfeeders near the hot tub and lots of  birds are visiting and singing in the trees.  I finally got to see an eastern bluebird again in the trees and on our lawn  and Bob saw it for the first time and he was astounded at how blue they are.  He could not believe the neon blue color!   A couple days ago I think I finally saw a cardinal in our yard (or some red bird so still not sure).

Tanya is playing with my fingers as I type so I think she is telling me it is time for “cuddle kitty”.   Enjoy the photo.

Happy anniversary

Bob got me a beautiful orchid plant for our 34 anniversary.  Our life is special every day so it is ok that I was in classes half the day and he has a wood bench building class tonight.  Tomorrow night we do something special (but pretty much every day is special!)

We enjoyed our memories of our marriage and life ahead sitting in the hot tub this afternoon and will probably have a toast to the coming year when he gets home tonight.   At our age that is romantic.
