A charming, sweet, relaxing, downhome day

We got up close to 9 a.m. and had coffee on the screen porch  Our first stop was the Travelers Rest farmers market where I visited my favorite tent and got their wonderful homemade bread.  At another tent  we got the last box of very ripe sweet peaches.  Then we noticed lots more tents and found that they had the Travelers Rest Pork BBQ Festival with about 10 BBQ places and 20 tents with crafts and activities.  We did a quick check and then went to swim at Furman.

After swimming we returned for BBQ lunch, yum,  and ate it while listening to a story teller and then a poetry reading.  Lots of nice little local craft tents.  Then home where my girlfriend G. Ann came over and we did Tai Chi then a little nap and off to the next event which we had learned about at the Farmers Market.

Around 7 we drove the 5 miles to Slater to an outdoor gathering with live music. Slater is a little town of about 3000.    It was a fund raiser to remodel Slater Hall. http://slaterhallsc.org/.  This was a mill town back in the 1920’s and Slater Hall was the community center and they want to bring it back for the community to use again. The mill, still in operation, has a rich history, including a role in producing the fabric used for the Apollo 11 spacesuits that “walked on the moon”.  In the last several years they have greatly improved the landscaping, made a walking path and put in a playground. We took our lawn chairs and set up on the lawn.  It was a gorgeous evening, not too hot, and we enjoyed some good old rock and roll while watching the little kids play.

All in all, a very satisfying day.
