TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – If you are interested in primitive and survival skills, an upcoming seminar scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19 in Travelers Rest may be a perfect time to brush up on old skill sets as well as learn some new ones.
Local author and Travelers Rest Tribune contributing writer L. Woodrow Ross will present the one-day seminar, covering basic skills such as fire starting with a bow drill and flint and steel.
Throughout the day, Ross will demonstrate flint knapping, cordage made from natural fibers, Cherokee blow guns, atlatls and hand-made bows and arrows, among other things.
Survival techniques such as water purification, useful native plants, trapping, shelter building and other survival tactics will also be covered, according to Ross.
“Although one may hope to never need the skills required to survive in a wilderness situation or in the case of a natural disaster, the ability to do so is very gratifying, and acquiring these skills is a great source of enjoyment,” Ross said. “You will depart better prepared to adapt to the natural environment and utilize primitive skills to enjoy the wilderness rather than feel threatened by it.”
The course – which is limited to 15 participants – will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $79 per person for attendees who register on or before Saturday, Sept. 28. After Sept. 28, the cost is $89 per person. Attendees who register with a family member or friend will receive a 15 percent discount per person.
Registration information is available by email at email@example.com or by calling 864-238-1944. Advance payment is required for registration.
